Adorno wrote in “The Schema of Mass Culture”: Images are seized but not contemplated” (or something like that). I suggest that we contemplate this particular image under the light of this phrase, may be this is real or even better it’s closer to the truth then we dare to admit…
Qifa, as someone whose ehnic background consists of Iranian and Native American (I know, a very unlikely combination), I must say I find your post’s image hilarious, but at the same time a bit racist.
How would your Jumblatt be received dressed as a tribal black African? Or an orthodox Jew?
For us Native Americans, this sort of thing is akin to naming sports teams after us- it’s generally not appreciated.
The image of the Native American is from an old photograph of an individual in his native clothing and head dress. I just stuck Walid Bek’s face on it and used some photo molding software to soften out the colors.
The image is meant as a direct response to Jumblatt’s own statement about the Druzes and Maronites being like the “red indians”, itself a rather racist remark.
